FSC® Certified Recycled: Know The Source

FSC® Certified: Know the source
Much has been made about being “less bad” and that has been a good place to start the conversation. Heppner Hardwoods was in that lane too. But, after 40 years in the woodworking business, 15 of them specializing in flooring, we are taking the lead by manufacturing reclaimed boards into solid and engineered flooring that is Forest Stewardship Council® Certified. Our solid flooring is 100% made in America using 100% American products – we give you “100% all good.“

Don’t Forget About Beauty
Nothing can replicate the beauty, warmth and uniqueness of real wood. Before the green movement, the beauty of wood was most often defined by perfection, now reasonable stewards are more inclined to embrace all boards, each with its own unique characteristics. With best practices for production and reclaimed utilization there is less consumption.

Sustainability: More than FSC® Certified Fiber

  • Wood is a carbon neutral product that produces oxygen during its growth cycle and stores carbon during its service life
  • Indoor air quality is better with wood floors
  • Wood floors use less water and energy to produce than other flooring options
  • At the end of its service life, wood flooring can be burned as fuel or recycled
  • Wood floors last hundreds of years, so they won’t need to be replaced as often as other flooring options

Living Futures: Paying it Forward
Sustainability as defined by the International Living Futures Institute aspire to be net positive in their energy, water, material and community impacts. The other side of the movement is one that advocates for lifestyle and building products improvements that create healthy environments where children and families can flourish free of allergens, asthma, mold contaminants, learning disabilities, obesity, cancer and more.

Now FSC® Certified and Reclaimed Are Not Mutually Exclusive
The Chain of Custody Program provides the standards for sourcing reclaimed materials, covering the purchase, verification and classification of reclaimed materials for use in FSC® Certified products and projects.

All of our Reclaimed Lumber products are eligible for MR 4.1 and MR 4.2 (Recycled Content) points, MR 7 (Certified Wood) points and if within 500 miles of Azusa, California, MR 5.1 and MR 5.2 (Regional Materials) points.

Board Whisperer: Crafting Reclaimed Rafters into Flooring

Making reclaimed flooring is difficult and not for amateurs. The trades required are, in part, curator, board whisperer, historian, vintner, and of course, master woodworker.

The master woodworkers at Heppner Hardwoods will repurpose vintage boards into flooring, paneling, table-tops and architectural millwork from salvaged:

    • Barn Siding
    • Circle/Band Sawn or Hand Hewn Sleeper Beams
    • Circle Sawn or Hand Hewn Ceiling Beams
    • Old Boards
    • Trusses
    • Cooperages and Brewing Warehouses

Ceiling Beam

Reclaimed Ceiling/Rafter Beams often end up on the floors in modern kitchens or great rooms. One might say that the repurposing of the overhead ceiling beams to  floor boards are a lightning-rod for this retro reincarnation. The size and soundness of the 19th century  purlins, truss & tie beams, rafters, and the large connecting ties are a prime size for the scope of our modern 21st century dwellings. More specifically, the soundness and size of these beams are ideal for making them into wide plank engineered floors. Structural support beams are suspended above the damp ground elements that are often associated with foundation boards. As such, the rafter  beams are far less susceptible to dry rot. As we have mentioned previously in our Board Whisperer series, much of the rich patina found in reclaimed foundation boards, come from  direct contact of soil and damp alkaline leaching or wicking into them. This is especially true of centuries old barns and out buildings that had housed livestock.

Some of the characteristics of real reclaimed wood ceiling beams:

    • American Species: Readily available Red and White Oak. Chestnut, Hickory, Cherry, and Walnut, when available
    • Four sided, hand hewn with a broad axe, adze or hatchet
    • Sawn beams, saw marks ranging from vertical, band or circular saw
    • Mortise and tenon joints
    • Marriage marks, carpenter’s marks, scribe marks, insect tracts nail holes and cracking
    • Sentiment; made up of grit, character and love for family and country

Another piece of date stamping for barn wood might be evidenced by the presence of lightning-rods. A barn fire can be devastating and the heat produced by stored hay was known to attract lightning.  In the past, the barn was justifiably the largest, tallest, and most important building on the farm. To the early settlers, survival depended on whether they could, not only raise enough crops during the summer, but successfully store it for usage throughout the long winter. The need for protecting Americans’ livelihood resulted in hundreds of companies manufacturing lightning rods and brightly colored glass balls which were sold by salesman, traveling in horse-drawn wagons from farm to farm. Consider that if it were not for lightning rods, there may not be  many barns left to be dismantled or to be protected by historical societies.

Heppner Hardwoods strives to achieve the best practices through sustainable manufacturing processes, maintaining American jobs and human rights.

Whip Sawn Flooring

What is Whip Sawn?

Whip Sawn Flooring; a look derived from the reciprocal action of a whip saw or pit saw.

In the early days, before the availability of power machines, a pit saw operation of one man above and the other in a pit was used to saw logs. It was a challenge for the pit boss to control the wobble of the flexible blade, therefore undulation and saw marks resulted and required a secondary craftsman to smooth out the surface.  Now, due to the popularity of vintage and the woof and warp of early Americana, Heppner Hardwoods has created this same texture through proprietary processes.
