Engineered Flooring

13Engineered flooring is comprised of two components; the lamella (wear layer/veneer) and the plywood substrate.  We hand select only the best decorative boards for re-sawing into veneers that will be hot glued to the plywood. The gluing of the lamella is processed on a continuous feed glue line, which means that the exposed top decorative board will be kept at it’s randomly optimum long lengths (3′ – 13′ with the average long length at 8′ long) to which the plywood will be cut, unlike other manufactures that cut the veneer to the same 4′ – 8′ length of the plywood.  Thus, a Heppner Hardwoods floor will be pleasing to the aesthetics with randomly long lengths, unlike a nested bundle floor, to which its purpose is to be easier to handle and cheaper to make.

Another advantage over the competition is that we use only  the best plywood which is comprised of high value Baltic-Birch inter-woven into multiple  plywood layers, usually 9 plys for 3/4″ thick planks, and glued together with exterior rated adhesives. If the grade of the plywood is compromised, it could become a case of what you don’t see will hurt you.

Wide Plank Engineered Flooring

There are several advantages to purchasing an engineered hardwood floor. It is more dimensionally stable than solid wood flooring and less prone to width cupping (smiling or frowning) or shrinking length wise.  With the proper  installation and maintenance, a well manufactured engineered floor can be installed in environments where a solid, especially a solid wide plank  floor, would not dare to tread.

The top veneer of an engineered floor can range from 4 mm – 7 mm or anywhere in between. You can add the same attributes to an engineered floor as you would to a solid floor. We can assist you with decisions about bevels, radius edges, end matching, texturing, fuming and other finishing distinctions.

When considering  wide plank flooring, consisting of boards ranging from  8″ – 13″ wide, a thinner wear layer may be indicated. Heppner Hardwood  consultants will help with that determination and advise on the best install method.  We custom mill every floor, plank by plank, to your specifications.

Besides all the advantages that engineered flooring has to offer, the installation contractor is relying on Heppner Hardwoods expertise in specie selection as well as precision milled tongue and groove or groove and groove.  The T & G will be milled with-in 1/32″ tolerance and will match well with-in the substrate, not the veneer.  Therefore, should a new look be desired it will allow multiple sanding and refinishing.

In the manufacturing of our engineered flooring products, we use exterior Baltic Birch plywood as a platform. This product is all birch hardwood veneers bonded with phenolic WBP (Weather – Boil Proof) glue which will withstand boiling water for a period of 72 hours and is CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified. This plywood is a must for a platform of a quality engineered product. The hardwood faces (lamellas) are bonded to the plywood using Polyurethane (PUR) hot melt glue. This glue is used in Europe as well, and does not produce any VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds). This glue is waterproof and had no added formaldehyde.
